THE SOMERCOTES GROUP OF WIs SPRING MEETING

14th April 2010

The Spring meeting of the Somercotes Group of WIs took place at the Cononco Room in Louth on Wednesday, 14th April at 7.30pm.  It was a return visit for well-known artist  Pollyanna Pickering and her daughter, who had thrilled us last time with her account of their journey into the depths of China to paint Giant Pandas at a Government Reserve dedicated to rescuing and breeding this rare animal.  On this occasion it was to display and talk about her paintings of British Wildlife. Pollyanna is an excellent speaker.  Her talk was not only very interesting, but also informative.  She explained how she had run a Wildlife Hospital for fifteen years.  Initially concentrating on rescuing birds of prey this soon escalated to other animals, she often returned home to find injured animals left on her doorstep.  She became quite good at learning how to set broken wings and treat other injuries.  Pollyanna will not work from photographs, insisting on having the subject matter in front of her, so all her sketches and paintings had been done from rescued animals. Her daughter assists her in her work, being responsible for the text within her books and accompanying photographs.  Pollyanna had a variety of goods for sale such as books, coasters, mugs, etc. which incorporated her work.  She is a very commercial artist and has been commissioned for various projects including the famous “Harrods bears”.

The standard of entries for the pencil drawing of wildlife was excellent. Pollyanna Pickering presented the Boots vouchers and the Amy Hudson Rose Bowl to the competition winners who were Saltfleetby WI and commented that the snails were beautifully drawn.

Saltfleetby WI will now hold the Amy Hudson Rose Bowl until next year. North Thoresby & District WI came second for a picture of swans which had much detail and movement. Third were Alvingham WI with a charming squirrel.

The Autumn meeting will take place on Wednesday 22nd September at 7.30pm in the Conoco Room, Louth.  The entertainment for the evening will be provided by the Brigg Amateur Operatic Society.  Tickets for this event are £3.50 for members and for non-members tickets will be available from 01.09.10 or on the door at a cost of £4.00.  There will be refreshments and a raffle, while the Competition is to make an evening bag in any suitable medium.

Thank you, North Thoresby Group Representative, for your excellent report.
