WILDLIFE GARDENING
MANIFESTO
The NFWI has signed
the Wildlife Gardening Manifesto
It was
produced by the Forum for Gardening with Wildlife in Mind, a body
that brings together more than 70 organisations including Government
Agencies, horticultural and scientific bodies, nature conservation NGOs
and commercial businesses.
The overall purpose is "to inspire people to manage gardens for their own
enjoyment in ways which also benefit wildlife". It works to cultivate
a responsible attitude to the natural environment on the part of gardeners and
the garden industry and to gather evidence supporting the benefits, to people
and biodiversity, of gardening with wildlife in mind.
For those wishing to get involved, there are various possibilities, including
encouraging retail outlets to provide more information, putting pressure on
local authorities and developers to ensure that adequate space for gardens is
provided in all new developments (and that existing gardens are not built upon)
and getting far more people involved in monitoring garden wildlife.
