Message from the
Show Committee Chairman

January 2010:

She advises that:

The countdown to the Lincolnshire Show starts in earnest now.  The Show Committee only has two more full meetings before it is let loose on the showground in June - don't panic, girls!

Perhaps the first green shoots of spring will give you all the inspiration you are looking for to enter Class 1, the Co-operative Class, although summer, autumn and winter also have great potential.

Colour can be used effectively to depict a season and autumn could mean Bonfire Night, just as winter could be a Christmas theme.

If your WI hasn't entered before, or not for some time, make 2010 the year you have a go.  This class gives members with different skills the chance to work together to produce an eye catching display.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Class 2, the Craft Class, has Christmas as its theme.  A decoration in any medium is required, suitable for hanging on a tree.  Even though it will be mid-summer at show time, we are thinking of ways to display them to their best advantage and it would be handy to have as much notice as possible of how many entries we can expect.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A copy of On With The Show  might be useful for Class 3, Nature's Store, which asks for a true preserve, i.e. one which has a long shelf life.  It also contains guidance on jars, containers and sealing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the Groups' exhibits, Class 4, we have moved away from asking for a pedestal exhibit, so there can be some free thinking on what accessories can be used.  more than one placement is allowed but it has to be on a 4' x 4' board as usual.  Groups exhibits always do so much to decorate the marquee so we are looking forward to some brilliant displays.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Lincolnshire show is a great showcase for the WI so please enter or volunteer to help to steward with exhibits or catering.

Details have already been mailed to WIs but please just get in touch if you need to know more.  (Telephone number:  see schedule)

NOTES ON THE SCHEDULE FOR THE 2010 LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW

Please read the Schedule carefully and refer to "On With The Show" 2008 edition.

These notes are by no means exhaustive but we hope they will be of help, especially if you have not entered before.  If you have any questions please contact the Show Chairman, whose telephone number is given on the show schedule, of which your WI Secretary now has a copy.

CLASS 1

Cooperative Class: Seasons

CLASS 1 is judged on interpretation of the theme and the staging of the items as well as the quality of the three items asked for.  Look for a balance between the size of the items - don't let one item dominate the exhibit.

ACCESSORIES should be just that:  small items that enhance your theme, but these are optional;  none might be just as appropriate if your items "say it all".  Accessories should not show any brand or trade names.

AREA and BASE:  The Schedule states:
in an area 2' x 2';  you are able to choose the shape of your base, eg: round, triangle, free form, etc, but it must be no larger overall than 2' x 2'.

BASE ONLY:  ie: no sides or back.  However, you could incorporate a "drape" as part of your staging if desired.  If the base is covered with fabric it should be stretched over the base to give a smooth surface with neat corners; it is part of your staging and will be judged as such.  Make sure the thickness of the fabric doesn't make your base larger than the 2' x 2' space.  If you raise items from the base on blocks for staging, make sure these are finished neatly whether they fully are on show or not.  When you have completed staging your exhibit, stand back and look to make sure nothing overhangs the sides of the 2' x 2' area.

FLOWER ARRANGEMENT:
The flower arrangement should NOT include accessories.
Fresh flowers and foliage also rules out the use of any dried flowers, but seed heads are allowed.
Flowers are left in situ for judging,
From past experience, the sides of the marquee can blow about if it is at all breezy, so arrangements should be stable and not top heavy; therefore choose containers carefully but don't let this limit your height.

ONE ITEM OF COOKERY  really means that, ie: one item, not six fairy cakes or scones, etc.  The cookery item may be sweet or savoury.  Confectionery is not classed as a cookery item.

Cookery and craft items are removed from the exhibit for judging.  If at all possible, don't attach items (particularly craft) to the base because the judge's steward might not be able to reposition them in exactly the same way.

The cooperative entry enables several members to join in to pool ideas and skills.  A basic requirement is that you have fun putting it together!

CLASS 2

   It's Christmas! : A Christmas Tree Decoration

We are asking for a form of hanger to be part of the tree decoration, so that it may be hung for display after judging.

We have not specified a particular size because we did not want to limit your ideas about shape.  However, in theory they should be of a size that you would expect to put on a tree at home.

Any type of craft material may be used as long as it is suitable for the object and fairly durable.

CLASS 3

  Preserve:  Nature's Store

This is the class where a copy of "On With The Show" would come in useful.

A preserve should have "lengthy keeping ability" which rules out fruit curds, mincemeat, uncooked chutneys and relishes.

Size and type of container is left to the exhibitor and depends on the produce being preserved;  in this way the choice of preserve is left open to the exhibitor.

According to "On With the Show" the external appearance, (ie: container, label and cover),  forms part of the overall mark.

CLASS 4

   A Floral Exhibit from LNFWI Groups:
A Summer's Evening

This year we have not specified a "pedestal" exhibit" in order to give more scope to the style of container(s) used.  We leave it to your imagination and to what is transportable to the showground.

The exhibit must be on your own 4' x 4' base board, which will be placed on the ground.
